Teaching

Michael Evans has enjoyed teaching drum students of all ages for many years. He has taught drums and percussion for the Brooklyn Philharmonic, at public schools all over New York state with Skip LaPlante’s Music for Homemade Instruments, for Young Audiences with the famous Ken Butler, and at an Achievement First elementary school in Queens. His full-length solo children’s show was presented at Roulette. He led a drumming workshop for children at the Chocolate Factory, and has taught at the Electric Eclectics festival in Meaford, Canada for 10 years. As an active and versatile performing musician on the downtown scene and abroad, he shares the joy of rock, blues, jazz, and world genres in private lessons as well as group classes.

In classes led by renowned percussionist Michael Evans, teens will learn to improvise their own instant group compositions in an encouraging creative environment. Students will develop rhythmic skills on the drum set, hand drums, and various percussion instruments. Then, using their new music vocabulary, they will practice listening and responding appropriately in the moment.

MESH Studio is home of the non-profit Susan Hefner and Dancers, used for music and dance classes, rehearsals, recording and salon performances. Our philosophy is that everyone is born an artist, and with the proper encouragement, we can use these innate qualities of intelligence, fresh thinking, and connection with others to build vital life skills. We are located at 46 Duffield Street in downtown Brooklyn, near the Jay Street/ Metrotech stop on the F, A, C or R trains, the Dekalb Street stop on the B or Q train, or the Borough Hall stop on the 2, 3, 4, or 5 train.

Private lessons are available at MESH studio, or at your home. Please contact Michael at meswirls@earthlink.net to make an appointment.
